SRO Solutions supports an independent global energy company with lift-and-shift cloud migration.

SRO Solutions SDU has been a key toolkit to complete a zero downtime, lift-and-shift data migration for an independent global energy company, moving its IBM Maximo asset management system for its German gas and oil operations to the cloud.

This exploration and energy production company's worldwide operations spun across the North Sea, North Africa, and the Asia-Pacific region. The company uses Maximo as a work management system in tandem with IBM’s Health, Safety and Environment Manager add-on to improve the productivity, efficiency and safety of assets.

SRO Solutions was approached by the company to oversee the transition of its Maximo system to the cloud, ahead of the closure of one of its German data centres. SRO used its bespoke Data Utility tool (SDU) to ensure zero downtime during the switchover and avoid significant disruption to the company’s operations.

Bill Wallace, SDU product owner and Principal Consultant at SRO Solutions, said:

“The closure of the German data centre meant that the business was under severe time restrictions, but they also wanted to make sure the migration would not impact the day-to-day operations. Our SDU tool was designed for exactly this type of situation, enabling data migrations with minimal operational risk and no impact to system users.

“Some companies cannot afford to have outages or downtime when migrating their databases. The SDU tool eliminates this risk by allowing the current production system to remain operational while Maximo's data is moved across. Any changes made to the current system are automatically synchronised, and the new environment is thoroughly tested to identify potential issues before a final switchover occurs.

“This approach gave the business the assurance that the go-live would be successful and reduced the possibility of having to roll back to the old system, a situation that would have placed them under even greater time pressure to exit their data centre in Germany.”

The entire data migration project was carried out remotely, with SRO Solutions liaising directly with the UK and Germany teams.
